Interesting Data Gigs # 16: A special announcement about the Interesting Data Gigs Talent Collective

Why you should be part of a Talent Collective, even if it's not my own

If you are not a subscriber of Interesting Data Gigs, join 1700+ Data geeks (between LinkedIn and this newsletter) that receive it directly in their inbox each week — it’s free.

Hello Data geeks.

Today, I have an exciting announcement to make, but before that, let me explain to you why I’m doing all this, and why I’m writing this newsletter every single week.

Why I’m doing this

One of my main goals with this newsletter is to actually help people to find new Data Analytics roles in this tricky and complicated industry. That’s it.

That’s the main premise of why I’m doing this every single week.

But to be honest with you, this has not been an easy path for me.

There have been so many long nights (including today when I’m writing this at 12:45 am), so many nights that I can’t be with my wife and my kids in order to do a decent job with the newsletter.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not complaining here; I’m doing this because I love writing technical stuff and helping people, and this is the perfect place where I can do both.

Again: that’s the premise for all this work.

So, I needed to find a good and honest way to support my work here and Pallet seemed like the perfect option for it.

Pallet’s team knocked on the door

In my process of starting to get traction with this work here, I’ve seen that many other creators in this amazing platform, were promoting something called “The Talent Collective”, and I was wondering to myself WTF is that?

In simple terms:

This is a win-win for every party involved here:

  • People have access to an amazing group of open positions and their resumes are seen by dozens of companies at the same time. It’s totally free to be part of a Talent Collective

  • Companies could have access to a diverse pool of candidates where many of whom are ready for an interview. This means that the process to fulfill a role is shorter here

  • The creator (or the curator) is paid by those companies in order to get access to this pool of talent

So, when I saw all this, I reached out directly to the Pallet’s team and had a fruitful conversation with Julia (the Community Manager from Pallet).

She showed me the amazing potential here, but I had to do some things first: I need a Stripe account to work with them and a U.S based entity.

I solved all that thanks to Stripe’s Atlas, and Interesting Gigs, Inc was incorporated in order to do this with the right support (a good story to tell for another occasion).

And the rest is history.

Why you should join a Talent Collective if you are looking for a new job

Some of you asked me privately why I’m building a Talent pool here and why people should join a Talent Collective.

The keywords here are RESEARCH and VISIBILITY. Let me explain to you why.

The era of applying to multiple jobs at the same time and waiting for a response has ended.

This strategy doesn’t work. Believe me: I have been there.

There is a better way to apply for a job and it’s the basis of everything I’m doing here in this newsletter: RESEARCH, RESEARCH, and RESEARCH.

If you have read some of my articles here, you see that I’ve dedicated a lot of time to:

  • Understand the business model of the company I’m writing about

  • research about the culture of the company, financial health, the dynamics of the team, and more

  • see the possible people you will be working with (a key part of this)

  • and give some ideas to stand out

I could not do this if I don’t make good research about the company, so I encourage you to do the same when you are applying for a new role.

Part of good research right now is to see if the company you want to join is already in a Talent Collective.

Why? Two reasons:

Companies are adapting right to these new times, where candidates are spread over the internet, but when they are part of the Talent Collective, this means that they are actively looking for a new role, and they are stepping up their game.

I will illustrate this with a simple example:

If you are looking for a new role as a Product Manager today in a B2C company, and you are not subscribed to 's newsletter and you are not part of his Talent Collective, you could miss a lot of incredible opportunities here:

The same applies to companies looking for Product Managers: this could be the fastest and easiest way to find incredible Product people in this challenging market.

Some changes in the Interesting Data Gigs Talent Collective

Over the weekend, I was reading my email and I saw a message from Kai Han, one of the co-founders and CEO of Pallet, explaining that right now, the collective right now would have a single payment flow for everything, and it makes a lot of sense.

In the past: there were two payment flows here:

  • the first one was for posting jobs with different price tiers

  • and the second to get access to the pool of talent with different price tiers as well

It was a little confusing.

But all that has been resolved with this new payment flow:

Now a company can have access to posting jobs and access to the pool of talent with a single payment per month. Same price for everything = more value

For example, in our Talent Collective, there are just three pricing tiers now:

  • Starting at $99 USD per month: A company can post 3 jobs and get access to the Talent pool

  • at $199 USD per month (our recommended tier): A company can post 5 jobs that will be featured at the top of the job board, get access to the Talent pool, a shout-out to my Twitter audience, and a shoutout in this newsletter here in Substack and on its LinkedIn based version (read by 1500+ people)

  • and at $399 per month: A company can post 10 jobs that will be featured at the top of the job board, get access to the Talent pool, a shout out to my Twitter audience, and a shoutout in this newsletter in Substack + LinkedIn, a shout-out to my LinkedIn audience (7.626 followers and growing) and finally: sharing the top 5 roles in several Slack Data Analytics focused communities where I’m part of it (more than 27k members among all those communities)

So: if your company is actively hiring, it’s time to be part of our Talent Collective. Use the DATAGIG code for a pleasant surprise.

5 Other Talent Collectives you should consider being part of (depending on the role)

But again: my goal is to help you to find amazing gigs in the tech industry, so, I will let other amazing talent collectives here, divided by type of roles and focus:

  • LennysJobs.com: As I shared before: if you are a Product Manager and you are looking for a new role, this is a no-brainer to be part of 's Talent pool here. The same applies to a company looking for PMs

  • ProductLife Talent Collective: curated by is another Product Management focused Talent pool. So, if you are a Product Manager looking for a new role, this is another place to be part of.

  • The Pragmatic Engineer Talent Collective: curated by , this Talent collective is perfect for Engineering leaders and Senior Engineers looking for a new gig. Gergely is always putting in a little extra: every role posted on his job board has to pass the Pragmatic Engineering Culture Test at least 10 of 12. If you are a company hiring Senior Engineers, just read some of the testimonials here

  • Not Boring Talent Collective: curated by , where he will share some of the roles in his newsletter with more than 150k curious minds in tech as he describes it. So, if your target role is part of the Not Boring Captial portfolio, it’s a no-brainer to be part of this collective

You can find many of them on the Pallet’s website.

Final words

Some of you have asked me directly if there is a way you could support my work. This is a perfect way that I found.

It’s that simple: If your company is hiring new Data Analytics people, share the link to the Talent Collective with them, or if you know someone who is actively looking for this kind of role, feel free to send it as well.

I will be forever grateful to you if you take some time to do that.

Thank you, and see you in the next issue,

Marcos out.
